Selected Open Educational Resources (OERs): Qualitative Research Methods
Please note: The resources that appear below are not intended to comprise an exhaustive collection of OERs about qualitative research design and methods. They are the readings that I selected for use with novice doctoral researchers during their first qualitative research methods course, used in combination with the library materials also listed on this website. As students request additional information, and as I observe the patterns of their use and understanding of these readings, I amend and append this list.
Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods
Hammersley, M. (2013). What is qualitative research? London: Bloomsbury Academic.doi:10.5040/9781849666084
https://www.bloomsburycollections.com/book/what-is-qualitative-research/
Description: "This book invites readers to explore the nature of qualitative research, and to recognise the varied and conflicting forms it can take. It examines how these contrast with quantitative work, as well as how they differ from journalism and imaginative literature. The book describes various methodological philosophies that have shaped qualitative work, as well as different types of orientation to be found within it today. It offers clear definitions of key terms and concepts, and also a detailed exploration of recent disputes among qualitative researchers, with a view to showing how differences in practice relate to underlying commitments." I used chapters 1 ("Defining Qualitative Research") and 2 ("Methodological Philosophies") as required readings during the first week of class.
Bhattacherjee, A. (2012). Social science research: Principles, methods, and practices. Tampa, FL: Global Text Project. Retrieved from http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/oa_textbooks/3/
Description: "This book is designed to introduce doctoral and graduate students to the process of scientific research in the social sciences, business, education, public health, and related disciplines. It is a one-stop, comprehensive, and compact source for foundational concepts in behavioral research, and can serve as a stand-alone text or as a supplement to research readings in any course on research methods. The contents and examples are designed for anyone interested in behavioral research (not just information systems people), and so, the book should appeal to most business programs, social sciences, education, public health, and related disciplines." I used chapter 3 ("The Research Process") as a required reading during the first week of class.
